Halloween Parade - Advanced Band Only! Advanced Band students get to march in the Halloween Parade with the Niwot High School Jazz Band coming up on Oct. 28th! Here are some details for the event: When: Saturday, Oct. 28th, parade start at 10am Where: Longmont's Roosevelt Park, meet near the Memorial Building (there are lots of bands and kids in costume, so it's a little tricky finding the right group. We'll try to have the Niwot HS banner to help.) Report time: 9:15 a.m. in costume * Students are welcome to join in the section costume ideas with the high schoolers or wear their own. Make sure students are able to comfortably walk and play their instrument in their costumes! * Don't bring your instrument cases - we have nowhere to securely stash them. It would be best to assemble instruments in the car before being dropped off at the parade start. * Drink water before the parade (hydrate) and eat a good breakfast. You will need energy! Grading Update I am updating the way I grade participation in band class. I experimented this quarter with not grading on participation, but it is such an important part of what we do in band class that I would like to add it in but improve and clarify the process. For Quarter 2 it will be called Rehearsal Skills and will be a weekly grade worth 20 points. Students will be scored on a rubric that measures how often they: bring all of their materials to class, engage and contribute to our rehearsal, understand the role of sound and silence in our rehearsal (i.e. only talking and playing at appropriate times), and exhibiting proper posture while they play their instrument. This scoring rubric will be posted in Schoology for you to see and these new Rehearsal Skills grades will begin in Quarter 2. I will also share this information with students in class, but wanted to make sure families were aware of the change as well! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns. From the Social Media Intern! Our Social Media Intern this week was Luis in Advanced Band. Luis took photos of Advanced Band working on the Warm Up before we played through three of our pieces. Upcoming Playing Tests! Both the Beginning Band and Advanced Band have playing tests due next week! These are a large part of their quarter grade, so it is important that all students are as prepared as possible! Help your student combat their nerves by asking them to play their test for you. Students can also come to Practice Club on Mondays to get some extra help! Playing tests should be recorded as a video at home and submitted to Schoology. If students have yet to turn in their video by the due date, they will perform their test in front of the class. Honor Band (8th Grade Only) All 8th-grade students are eligible to audition for the SVVS District Honor Band! All students have already learned the audition material–it is their first playing test! Students interested in auditioning should ensure they are available on January 23rd from 4-8:30 pm for the first rehearsal and all day on February 7th (8 am-4 pm rehearsal, 7 pm concert). Please encourage your students to use their playing test as their audition–this is a fun and exciting event for our students every year! This Week's Social Media Intern Maeve Simon took these photos of Ms. Cort demonstrating a passage on the trumpet for Intermediate band! |
