Spartan Snacks Every Friday, the music department sells snacks to the student body to raise money for our field trips. Last year, Spartan Snacks helped us to raise enough money to reduce the cost of the Eltich Gardens Field Trip by 15% for each student. Spartan Snacks is cash only, so please send a dollar or two with your students to school every Friday so that they can get a snack! Donations: Donations of individually packaged items for us to sell at Spartan Snacks would be greatly appreciated! Students love to buy candy, Takis, chips, and Gatorade. The next time you are at Sam’s Club or Costco, consider picking up something for us at Spartan Snacks! Volunteering: We need parent help to keep Spartan Snacks running this year! The snacks are already laid out on a table. All you need to do is move the table (and extra snacks) from the band room office to the lobby and help us sell snacks as students leave for the day. Set up should happen at 2:20 and we are usually done selling by 2:40 - only a twenty-minute commitment. Please send me an email if you are interested in giving us a hand - thank you! Daily Practice All students should be practicing for 10-20 minutes a day several times a week! If practicing at home is a challenge, please encourage your student to stay after school on Mondays for practice club! Practicing is like lifting weights - a small amount each day will help your student get the best results from their learning! If you or your student are unsure what they should be practicing, check our Daily Agenda slides (posted on Schoology) to see what we have been working on and if there are any specific practicing assignments.

Longmont Youth Symphony Open Rehearsal Longmont Youth Symphony is hosting an open rehearsal on Sept. 16th! This is an opportunity for students to sit in on a rehearsal, meet the students, and the music directors to see if LYS is something they are interested in. Attending this rehearsal is not committing to the organization, but a chance to see what LYS is all about. They rehearse at 9am at United Church of Christ (across the street from Longmont High School). Here is a flier with more info! Band Calendar Want to stay up to date on all the band events? Starting Monday, September 11th, Practice Club will be up and running again! Practice Club is held in the band room every Monday from 2:30-3:30. Any student can come and get extra help from Ms. Cort or just play cool music for an extra hour after school! Upcoming Playing Tests Playing tests are the best way for Ms. Cort to assess each student’s progress and help them to improve their playing skills. Playing tests are always posted to Schoology and are “Due or Do” on the due date. A video recording of the playing test is DUE on the due date or students can DO their playing test in class on the due date. Please help encourage your student practice for their playing tests (to get the best score they can!) to record their video at home, especially if they are nervous. This also helps us save class time! Advanced Band students already have a playing test assigned to them! Instrument Care Instruments are expensive and require regular maintenance and care to keep them in working order. All students are taught how to take care of their instruments, but here is a great resource if they need a reminder or if family members want to help! This week, our Social Media Interns were Paige Edwards and Emmett Troy! Paige says: "In Intermediate Band, we made fingering charts to help us review the notes that we have learned so far. Everybody was working together and helping each other to fill out their personal notes." Emmett says: "In Advanced Band, we learned a new piece of music." Signed Band Handbooks are now past due! They can still be turned in late - please sign and return them as soon as possible! If your student has an F in band class, it is likely because they still need to turn in their signed handbook.
Thank you for your patience with me! All students should now have their instruments and band lockers! Students may drop off their instruments in their locker in the band room before school starts and then pick it up on their way out of the building at the end of the day. If your student is renting an instrument from Sunset Middle School, you can expect the fee to appear on your student’s account in the next few weeks. This can be paid online through RevTrack or you can bring cash/check to Ms. Solc in the back office. Beginning Low Brass Players Check out this opportunity to improve your instrument skills and meet new friends through the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra! This opportunity is for Trombone, Baritone, and Tuba players. Please email Ms. Cort if you are interested! |
