It was great to meet so many parents and families at Parent-Teacher Conferences this week! If you weren’t able to make an appointment, please feel free to reach out via email and I’d be happy to talk about your student’s progress in band class!
All Practice Assignments are posted on Schoology in the Daily Agendas link (first link on each Schoology page). All students have a short practice assignment to complete everyday so that they are as prepared as possible to play together in class! Upcoming Events:
Jazz Band has their first concert in just two short weeks on October 6th! The performance will be held in the Sunset MS Band room and will begin at 6:30pm. Students should be dressed in their jazz band polo with black pants/skirt, black socks, and black shoes ready to warm up at 5:45pm. All are invited to join us for some great music! Advanced Band has the option to dress up with Niwot High School’s section costumes during the Halloween Parade on Oct. 29th! Students may also dress in a school-appropriate costume of their choice (as long as they can easily move and play their instrument while wearing it!) or their black Spartan Band shirt to the parade. Here is each section’s costume!

October is a very busy month for band students! Besides fall concerts and extra rehearsals, many students are preparing for honor band auditions, performances for 5th grade students, and Veterans Day celebrations. I hope you’re all looking forward to a great month of music-making!
Upcoming Events:
All students should be bringing their instruments home and practicing daily! Five to ten minutes a day makes a tremendous difference in young musicians’ musical growth and development. Not sure what your student should be practicing? Practice assignments can be found on the daily agenda slides linked on Schoology. Practice Club is canceled Sept. 29 because of Parent-Teacher Conferences. I’m looking forward to meeting parents and family members at conferences! From the district fine arts department: In partnership with St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation - bring your unwanted instruments and we will give them a new home in one of our music classrooms! You’ll receive a donation receipt for your taxes. You can also make a donation towards instrument repairs here. Drop off your instruments 9/28 9-12pm or 9/30 1-4pm at the Lincoln Building (619 Bowen St, Longmont). Questions? Reach out to Fine Arts Coordinator Janay Bird ([email protected]). Thank you for your continued support of music education in SVVSD! All the best, Ms. Cort [email protected] Haga clic aquí para español.
Thank you for your continued support of your band student at home! Beginning Band students are learning their first five notes and still coordinating how to hold their instrument with perfect posture and play with their best sound! The students are getting a lot of information during these first weeks on the full instrument. The more they practice at home, the faster they will improve! Advanced, Intermediate, and Jazz Band students have been busy perfecting music for their first concert! These students should also be recording their first playing test at home! Advanced Band students have their first playing test due on Schoology on Sept. 16th (today)! Intermediate Band students have their first playing test due on Schoology on Sept. 19th! Upcoming Events:
Band Shirts - a new Band t-shirt will be given to each student free of charge. These shirts are part of all students’ required concert uniform. If families would like to order additional shirts to wear in support of their students and the band program, please fill out this Google Form. The price for these extra shirts is $25 and can be paid by cash or check given to me (Ms. Cort) or Ms. Solc in the front office. I apologize for the change in price from the information I previously provided! Please complete the Google Form even if you had previously indicated you would like to order a t-shirt. All the best, Ms. Cort [email protected] Haga clic aquí para español.
Upcoming Events:
Intermediate, Advanced, and Jazz Band students should be practicing their instruments daily in order to be prepared for class and their upcoming playing tests. Advanced Band students have their first playing test due on Schoology on Sept. 16th! Intermediate Band students have their first playing test due on Schoology on Sept. 19th! Beginning Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion students have been focusing on perfecting their counting and playing using rhythm charts. These students should continue to do the majority of their practice on just their mouthpieces, but we’ll be putting together the full instruments very soon! If you’re curious how we learn new rhythms, ask your student to show you how we Count, Tah, Air, and Play everything we work on in class! Practice Club - Ms. Cort is putting together a Practice Club for all band students! This club will meet weekly after school and allow students to use the band room to practice their instruments and get extra help. Our official meeting time will be announced by next week’s newsletter! Happy Friday! Ms. Cort [email protected] Haga clic aquí para español.
We’ve had a great week of learning and getting to know the music we will be playing! Make sure your calendars are marked for the Jazz Band Concert on Oct. 6th and the Fall Concert (All Bands) on Oct. 27th! Coming up next week, all classes will be focusing on being silent before and after each repetition of the music to make our rehearsals as efficient as possible! Students should be practicing their instrument for a few minutes daily to be the most prepared for class (and upcoming playing tests!). All Students should consider taking private lessons in order to best improve their playing! Beginners can especially benefit from one-on-one instruction from a private teacher as they are learning the basics of playing their instrument. For older students, private lessons are the best way to hone and master the skills we learn in band class and have a great time getting better and better at your instrument. Here is a list of private teachers in the area. Additionally, Mindy Daugherty is a flute teacher not yet on this list, but she can be reached at [email protected] (she currently has a student attending Sunset, so she knows how great our kids are!). Trumpet teacher, Joey Blunk, is running a deal right now if you contact him about lessons before Sept. 30th (more info on this flier). The Longmont Youth Symphony is accepting auditions for their 2022-2023 season! This is a great opportunity for students to share their love of music with more rehearsals, concerts, and music friends. Upon auditioning for LYS, students are either placed into the Symphonic Band or Symphony Orchestra. Symphonic Band is typically where young, motivated musicians end up placing into, with the Symphony Orchestra usually being older, more experienced students. Please email me if your student is interested so we can work together on choosing audition music and check out their website. Advanced Band students get to march in the Halloween Parade with the Niwot High School Jazz Band coming up on Oct. 29th! Here are some details for the event: When: Saturday, Oct. 29th @ 10am Where: Longmont's Roosevelt Park, meet near the Memorial Building (there are lots of bands and kids in costume, so it's a little tricky finding the right group. We'll try to have the Niwot HS banner to help.) Report time: 9:20 a.m. in costume * Students are welcome to join in the section costume ideas with the high schoolers (to be determined) or wear their own. Make sure students are able to comfortably walk and play their instrument in their costumes! * Don't bring your instrument cases - we have nowhere to securely stash them. It would be best to assemble instruments in the car before being dropped off at the parade start. * Drink water before the parade (hydrate) and eat a good breakfast. You will need energy! Have a great Labor Day weekend! ~Ms. Cort |
